De basisprincipes
What generative engine optimization is
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of making your content easy for AI systems to find, understand and cite. An AI answer does not show ten links. It names a few sources and often recommends a few brands, so the aim shifts from ranking on a page to being part of the answer.
The term comes from a 2023 research paper by researchers at Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi. In their tests, content that added sources, quotations and statistics became noticeably more visible in generative answers. GEO builds on SEO: an engine can only cite pages it can crawl, and it leans on sources that search engines already trust.

| Engine | How it answers | Where its sources come from |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Answers in a chat, with web search and linked sources when a question needs them | Its own search crawler and partner search indexes. |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | A generated summary inside Google Search | Google’s own index. |
| Gemini | Google’s assistant, able to check its answers against Google Search | Google’s own index. |
| Perplexity | An answer with numbered citations | Its own crawler and index. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Chat answers in Bing, Edge and Microsoft apps | Bing’s index. |
Under the hood
How an AI answer is built
Engines differ in the details, but answers that use the web follow the same five stages. Each one is a place where your content can drop out, or be chosen.
- 01
The question is expanded
The engine turns one question into several searches to cover its different angles.
- 02
Pages are retrieved
It pulls pages from a search index. Pages that cannot be crawled or do not rank are rarely in the pool.
- 03
Passages are selected
From each page it takes the passages that answer the question most directly.
- 04
The answer is written
The model combines those passages with what it learned in training and writes a single answer.
- 05
Sources and brands are named
It links some of the pages it used, and tends to recommend brands that many trusted sources agree on.
De dienst
What our GEO service includes
From the first measurement to the report.
AI visibility audit
We run the questions your customers ask through the main AI engines and record who is mentioned, who is cited and what is said about you.
Crawler access
robots.txt, sitemaps and rendering checked for search and AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot, so nothing blocks them by accident.
Answer-ready content
Key pages restructured around real questions, with direct answers, facts, definitions and sources.
Entity and structured data
Organization, service, author and FAQ markup, and consistent business facts, so engines know exactly who you are.
Mentions and sources
Listings, reviews, industry publications and press: the third-party sources that AI answers lean on.
Tracking and reporting
A fixed set of questions rerun over time, plus visits from AI tools in your analytics, reported in plain language.
Onze aanpak
How a GEO project runs, in six steps
Measure first. Without a baseline, nobody can say whether the work changed anything.
Set the baseline
We agree the questions your customers ask, run them through the main AI engines and record who is mentioned and cited.
Open the doors
We check that search and AI crawlers can reach and read your pages, and that key content is not hidden behind scripts.
Make it citable
We rewrite and extend key pages so they answer questions directly, with facts, sources and clear structure.
Describe the business
Structured data, author details and consistent facts, so engines know who you are and what you offer.
Earn mentions
We work on the places AI draws from: listings, reviews, industry sites and press.
Track and adjust
We rerun the questions on a schedule, watch the visits from AI tools and adjust the plan.
Design
Six things that make content citable
They also make a page better for human readers, which is the point.
Answer first
Start each section with the direct answer, then explain. Engines lift passages that stand on their own.
Specific facts
Numbers, dates, prices, locations and definitions. Vague claims give an engine nothing to quote.
Named sources
Link to the evidence behind a claim. Sourced content is easier to trust and to cite.
Clear structure
Question-led headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables that match how people ask.
Visible authorship
Who wrote it, what qualifies them, and when it was last updated.
Consistent details
The same name, services, address and facts on your site, your profiles and every listing.
Lokale kennis
GEO in Dubai and the UAE
AI answers about a local business are built from local sources. Those are the ones to get right first.
Recommendation questions
People ask AI for “the best clinic in Jumeirah” or “a reliable contractor in Dubai”. The engines answer from reviews, directories, local guides and your own site.
Twee talen
Questions come in English and in Arabic. An engine can only cite Arabic content if it exists and is well written.
What AI says about you today
An old price, a previous address or a competitor named in your place: a first audit often finds facts that need correcting at the source.
Local sources
Google Business Profile, review platforms, industry directories and regional press are among the places AI draws on for local answers.
Search and AI
GEO or SEO: what is the difference?
GEO does not replace SEO. It adds a second goal to the same foundations.
| Aspect | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in a list of links | Be cited or recommended inside the answer |
| What gets picked | A page | A passage, a fact or a brand |
| How people arrive | They click a result | They read the answer, and some click a source |
| How it is measured | Rankings, impressions and clicks | Mentions, citations and visits from AI tools |
| What it needs | A crawlable, relevant, trusted site | All of that, plus clear answers and a consistent presence across the web |
Straight talk
What is known, and what is not
GEO is a young field. We would sooner tell you where the evidence ends than sell you certainty.
Known
AI search retrieves real pages
Engines with web access build answers from pages they can crawl and that already rank well. Sound SEO is the entry ticket.
Known
Clear, sourced passages get cited
Research and day-to-day testing point the same way: specific facts, named sources and direct answers are picked up more often.
Open
No engine publishes its rules
There is no official ranking guide for AI answers. Anyone who claims to know the formula is guessing.
Open
Answers vary
Ask the same question twice and the answer can differ. Tracking shows trends over many runs, not a fixed position.
Begroting
What GEO costs
A GEO project has three costs, and you should see each one separately.
Audit and baseline
A one-off cost at the start: the questions, the first measurement and the list of fixes.
Maandelijks werk
Content, structured data, mentions and tracking, agreed as a monthly scope.
Inhoud en ontwikkeling
Larger jobs such as new pages, research pieces or technical changes, quoted separately.
GEO is usually delivered together with SEO, because most of the work serves both. On the free consultation call we tell you whether a separate GEO project makes sense for you yet.

Veelgestelde vragen
Frequently asked questions about GEO
Twelve questions we hear about AI search.
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the work of making your content easy for AI systems to find, understand and cite, so that your brand appears in the answers given by ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of search results. GEO aims to have your content used and your brand named inside an AI-generated answer. GEO builds on SEO: engines can only cite pages they can crawl and tend to use sources that already rank. SEO in Dubai.
Is GEO the same as AEO, AI SEO or LLM optimization?
The names overlap. Answer engine optimization (AEO), AI SEO, LLM optimization and GEO all describe the same aim: being the source an AI answer draws on. We use GEO because it is the term from the original research.
Which AI engines do you cover?
ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. We agree with you which ones matter most for your customers and track those.
Can you guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend us?
No. Nobody controls what an AI engine says, and answers change from one run to the next. What we can do is remove what stops engines from reading and trusting you, and measure whether you appear more often.
How do you measure GEO results?
We run a fixed set of questions through the engines at regular intervals and record mentions and citations for you and your competitors. We also track the visits that arrive from AI tools in your analytics.
How long does GEO take?
Answers that rely on live web search can change within weeks of new content being crawled. What a model learned in training changes more slowly, with new model versions. Expect early signs in the first months and steadier results after that.
Do we need to allow AI crawlers on our website?
To be cited by an engine’s search feature, its search crawler must be able to read your pages. Whether to allow crawlers that collect training data is a separate decision. Several providers use different crawlers for the two, and we explain the options before anything is changed.
What is llms.txt, and do we need one?
llms.txt is a proposed file that summarises a website for AI systems. Support from the major engines is limited so far, so we treat it as optional: cheap to add, but not something to rely on.
Does structured data help with AI answers?
Structured data helps search engines understand a page, and AI answers are built on search results. There is no special markup for AI. It should always describe what is visible on the page.
Will AI answers reduce the traffic to our website?
For simple informational questions, fewer people click through when an AI summary answers them. That makes it more important to be the source that is named, and to own the questions that lead to an enquiry.
Do we still need SEO if we do GEO?
Yes. GEO depends on SEO: a page that is not indexed, not trusted or slow is unlikely to be used in an answer. Most of the work serves both. See our SEO service.
